The Ducks today announced their American Hockey League (AHL) club’s new name and logo in an ice-breaking ceremony at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif. Unveiled by owners Susan and Henry Samueli, and co-owner Jillian Samueli, the team was officially named the San Diego Gulls. The new logo pays homage to the legacy of the WCHL Gulls logo and features the Ducks color palette and other design elements, including the Ducks trademark windswept font. A touch of the signature Gulls blue was added to the Ducks color palette to embrace the hockey history and tradition of the community. The clubs new colors are orange, black, and blue.
“We are thrilled to officially bring the Gulls back to San Diego,” said Ducks Owners Henry and Susan Samueli. “While we initially considered several options, it quickly became clear the obvious affinity and affection the fans have for the Gulls name. We enthusiastically embrace the history and tradition of hockey in this market, and plan on adding to its legacy with a community-first organization and winning product.”

Anaheim’s primary development affiliate will join AHL teams from the Los Angeles Kings (Ontario, CA), San Jose Sharks (San Jose, CA), Calgary Flames (Stockton, CA) and Edmonton Oilers (Bakersfield, CA) organizations in the newly created AHL Pacific Division, as announced by the AHL in January. San Diego’s professional hockey tradition began in 1944 with the San Diego Skyhawks of the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL), who won the PCHL title during the 1948-49 season. The San Diego Gulls of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) won titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003.
